It has been a long time since I blogged about anything but a movie. I was in conversation with a co-worker today about the Penn State debacle and I had a revelation. First, the case needs to be investigated leaving no stone unturned. Everyone involved in abusing kids or covering up the abuse of kids is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. No shenanigans. Just get it done.
But Penn State needs a way forward. That is why if I am the athletic director, I get on the phone to Tony Dungy. Dungy is a man of peerless character. I ask him to come and coach at Penn State. I realize he is retired from coaching but I don't take no for an answer. If I have to, I beg him to come. I tell him that money is no object. I give him complete control of the program. He can keep the current staff or fire them all. It is up to him. What I need is a man who has unimpeachable character and knows football backwards and forwards. I need such a man to come and clean house and get this program back on its feet and, more importantly, the people involved back on the straight and narrow. I explain that it will only be for a few years then he can re-retire and we will bring in someone else.
Dungy is a man so highly esteemed that even the most cynical journalist would understand the statement Penn State would be making. This will never happen here again.
