As I understand it, this film is in limited release until sometime later this week. Not sure why they do things that way. It was only playing on two screens locally here in Des Moines. One was in the theatre farthest from my house. The other was on the IMAX screen downtown. Since the latter is a much shorter drive I chose that option. Had I the opportunity to do this again, I would have chosen the longer drive. While my experience with IMAX is limited, I think only a few movies would show well there. You have to sit high and in the middle. I got there late and sat lower and on the side as that was all that was left. Everything looked distorted. The closeup scenes are impossible to make out. Just not a good experience.
Having said that, this film was so good that even with the lousy theatre experience, it was well worth seeing. For the life of me, I can never figure out why people bash Tom Cruise. His acting is more than adequate and his on-screen presence and charisma are off the charts. This is a fabulous old-fashioned cloak and dagger movie with an upgraded technological spin to it. It is well cast. You are seeing several parts of the world. Loads of action, adventure, excitement. (As an aside, I was sitting next to some folks from India. When the movie moved to Mumbai and the city named flashed across the screen, they whistled their approval.)
The bad guys in this film believe that the world needs to be rebooted. Their plan to do this is to start a thermonuclear war. In the ash afterward, the world can start afresh. Ethan Hunt's mission, should he choose to accept it, is to shut these bad guys down. Unfortunately, a bombing at the Kremlin has been blamed on IMF and the entire cadre of agents have been disavowed: Ghost Protocol. Ethan and his team will have to operate outside of normal parameters. They are on their own. No outside support? The world tettering on the brink of nuclear war? No problem!
Breaking out of a Russian prison, fast roping out of the world's tallest building, sneaking into a secret military archive, a foot race in a desert sand storm, driving a BMW off a parking ramp and plunging a hundred meters to the ground. All in a day's work for the IMF team. Loads of action and suspense. You need to see this film.
Grade: A-
You have now reviewed the three movies Brad and I want to see before the year is over. You're living our dream! I'm glad they all get high ratings, though. We never see a movie Crackle doesn't recommend. :)
