Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

The wife and I saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie today.  My son went to the midnight show last night and said it was better than the first one.  That is a tall order since the first was pretty darn good.  But if he was not right, he was close.  The sequel was fantastic.  There are two things these movies have that make them so.

First is the editing.  Holmes sees in his mind how a fight will play out in slow motion before it begins.  If you have ever seen the movie Hero, and I highly recommend you do, it used a similar technique.  Here it is used repeatedly.  One would think that it would get annoying.  On the contrary.  These scenes are so well edited that you are excited even when the final one begins.  And the final one is the best.

Second, I guess you could call this a buddy film of sorts.  You know, where two main characters have a load of smart alec dialogue with one another.  No one has ever done this better than Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law.  These guys make it look effortless.  The timing playing off one another is impeccable.  This is another thing that could get annoying but because of the skill of these two actors, it is pure enjoyment.

This film pits Holmes against his intellectual equal, Dr. James Moriarity.  Holmes has been trying to unravel his scheme but Moriarity seems always a step ahead.  The two play a deadly game.  I don't want to reveal any more.  Just go see this movie.

Grade:  A.  This was easily the most fun and enjoyable movie I have seen so far in 2011.  Best film of the year (so far) for me is between this and Of Gods and Men.
